The Coming California Long Hot Summer Electricity Shortage

 SOURCE:

"To supply shortages on everything from silicon chips for cars and household appliances to food, including baby food, this summer promises an exceptionally miserable shortage—electricity in California, and other things elsewhere in the country.

California energy officials warned that the state lacks sufficient capacity to meet electric demand if other extreme events—perfectly predictable ones by the way—like heatwaves, and wild fires, and drought –occur.

The UK BBC’s climate fake news

 SOURCE:

"The BBC is very worried about ‘misinformation’ and ‘disinformation’ – especially when it comes to climate change, a cause close to Auntie’s heart. So much so that in 2020, it hired its first-ever specialist ‘disinformation’ reporter, who last year fronted an eight-part series for the World Service all about ‘climate disinformation’. The main theme of the show was that fake news about the climate could lead us to ‘catastrophe’.

Perhaps the BBC’s misinformation specialists should have been looking closer to home. Recently, the corporation’s very own climate editor, Justin Rowlatt, was found by the Beeb’s own editorial-complaints unit (ECU) to have made two ‘misleading’ statements in a Panorama documentary about climate change and extreme weather, broadcast last year.

Wind Turbines Out West, Epilogue, by Kevin Kilty

 SOURCE:

"Parts I and II of my Wind Turbines Out West essays didn’t exhaust this topic completely.
https://wattsupwiththat.com/2022/03/30/wind-turbines-out-west-part-1/
https://wattsupwiththat.com/2022/04/03/wind-turbines-out-west-part-ii/

In the meantime, some interesting developments relating to the topic have appeared. So, a closing essay seems appropriate. The structure of this final part in the series is to summarize claims made by wind turbine developers and which their proponents then repeat.

Claim:  These wind projects bring prosperity,
or at least good paying jobs and tax revenue.

I explained in Part I of this series that most rural locations in the West do not possess the economic infrastructure to gain much from these projects. The construction crews are transient and reside elsewhere. The manufacturing is elsewhere.

There isn’t a pressing need for local warehousing of parts or supplies. There will be a few technicians and their families who add to the local population, but they will be few.

Wrong, CNN, AP, NYT, etc., Climate Change Did Not Cause South Africa’s Tragic Floods, by H. Sterling Burnett, Ph.D.

 SOURCE:

"A Google news search for the term “climate change,” over the past few days turns up dozens of stories in corporate media outlets blaming climate change for recent deadly floods in South Africa. Although many of the stories accurately captured the pathos of the human tragedy resulting from South Africa’s floods, they all mispresented the facts: human caused climate change did not cause the recent floods.

History shows, because of its topography and regional ocean circulation patterns, floods regularly occur in South Africa. No data support the claim South Africa’s floods are increasing in number or intensity. The death and damage caused by the April 2022 flooding is due to rising populations in flood zones, poverty, and poor infrastructure.

ENERGY and ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS SUMMARY of last week

WTI crude oil increased 72 cents to $110.49
(up 69% year to date).

Gasoline jumped 5.3% (up 78% y-t-d)

Natural Gas fell 4.7% (up 105% y-t-d)

May 7 – CNN:
“Against the backdrop of the water crisis in the Colorado River Basin, where the country's largest reservoirs are plunging at an alarming rate, California’s two largest reservoirs — Shasta Lake and Lake Oroville — are facing a similar struggle. Years of low rainfall and snowpack and more intense heat waves have fed directly to the state's multiyear, unrelenting drought conditions, rapidly draining statewide reservoirs. And according to this week's report from the US Drought Monitor, the two major reservoirs are at ‘critically low levels’ at the point of the year when they should be the highest. This week, Shasta Lake is only at 40% of its total capacity, the lowest it has ever been at the start of May since record-keeping began in 1977. Meanwhile, further south, Lake Oroville is at 55% of its capacity…”

May 8 – Wall Street Journal:

“From California to Texas to Indiana, electric-grid operators are warning that power-generating capacity is struggling to keep up with demand, a gap that could lead to rolling blackouts during heat waves or other peak periods as soon as this year. California’s grid operator said Friday that it anticipates a shortfall in supplies this summer, especially if extreme heat, wildfires or delays in bringing new power sources online exacerbate the constraints. The Midcontinent Independent System Operator, or MISO, which oversees a large regional grid spanning much of the Midwest, said late last month that capacity shortages may force it to take emergency measures to meet summer demand… The risk of electricity shortages is rising throughout the U.S. as traditional power plants are being retired more quickly than they can be replaced by renewable energy and battery storage.”

May 9 – Reuters:
“Ukraine's president said… trade at the country's ports was at a standstill and urged the international community to take immediate steps to end a Russian blockade to allow wheat shipments and prevent a global food crisis. Volodymyr Zelenskiy made the comments after speaking to European Council President Charles Michel, who was visiting Odesa - the major Black Sea port for exporting agricultural products where missiles struck tourist sites and destroyed buildings on Monday.”

May 9 – Bloomberg:
“Demand for electricity in Texas is forecast to surge to a level rarely seen outside of summer as a spring heat wave drives up temperatures and millions of people crank up air conditioners. The state’s main grid operator, Electric Reliability Council of Texas, said it has secured enough supply to meet power use throughout the day. Demand on the grid hit 67.3 gigawatts early afternoon Monday and is forecast to peak at 71.1 gigawatts at 5 p.m. local time. That’s about 3.7 gigawatts short of the all-time demand record for the state, set in August 2019.”

May 10 – Associated Press:
“California's water use jumped dramatically in March, state officials said…, as one of the driest stretches on record prompted a wave of homeowners to start watering their lawns earlier than usual in defiance of Gov. Gavin Newsom's pleas for conservation amid a severe drought. Newsom last summer asked residents to voluntarily cut water use by 15% compared to 2020 as climate change intensified a drought that threatened to drain the state's reservoirs to dangerously low levels.”

May 11 – Bloomberg:
“The diesel crisis in the US may get worse this summer with the potential of shortages and rationing on the East Coast, said billionaire refinery and fuel station owner John Catsimatidis. ‘I wouldn’t be surprised to see diesel being rationed on the East Coast this summer,’ Catsimatidis, CEO of United Refining Co., said… ‘Right now inventories are low and we may see a shortage in coming months.’”

May 12 – Reuters:
"America’s antiquated electric infrastructure (upgrading) – a task some industry experts say requires more than $2 trillion. The current network of U.S. transmission wires, substations and transformers is decaying with age and underinvestment… Power outages over the last six years have more than doubled in number compared to the previous six years… In the past two years, power systems have collapsed in Gulf Coast hurricanes, West Coast wildfires, Midwest heat waves and a Texas deep freeze, causing long and sometimes deadly outages.”

May 12 – Reuters:
“Pressure on Europe to secure alternative gas supplies increased on Thursday as Moscow imposed sanctions on European subsidiaries of state-owned Gazprom a day after Ukraine stopped a major gas transit route. Gas prices surged, with the key European benchmark gaining 12% as buyers were unsettled by the mounting threats to Europe's supply given its high dependence on Russia. Moscow has already cut off supply to Bulgaria and Poland and countries are racing to fill dwindling gas reserves before winter.”

May 12 – Bloomberg:
“Russia has banned Gazprom PJSC from shipping gas to Europe through the Polish section of the Yamal pipeline in retaliation for international sanctions, potentially putting the continent’s energy security further at risk… The Yamal-Europe pipeline, barely used this year, has been seen as a potential alternative route in case Russian transits via Ukraine stop during the chaos of war.”

May 13 – Bloomberg:
“From record gasoline prices to higher airfares to fears of diesel rationing ahead, America’s runaway energy market is disquieting both US travelers and the wider economy. ... More than 1 million barrels a day of the country’s oil refining capacity — or about 5% overall — has shut since the beginning of the pandemic. Elsewhere in the world, capacity has shrunk by 2.13 million additional barrels a day, energy consultancy Turner, Mason & Co. estimates. And with no plans to bring new US plants online, even though refiners are reaping record profits, the supply squeeze is only going to get worse.”

Small modular reactors advance in the nuclear world, by Kelvin Kemm, Ph.D.

 SOURCE:

"The first two decades of the 21st Century will go down in history as a time of amazing world confusion about energy supplies, particularly electricity.

This is all due to electricity planning being done too much at a political policy level, and not by engineers and scientists. This in turn was linked to an inordinate fear of supposed man-induced climate change linked to fossil fuels, primarily driven by extreme green activist groups. Sadly, much scientific logic was trampled under the feet of street demonstrators, clamoring for Mother Nature’s natural energy: wind and solar.

The Global Warming Scare Is Most Certainly Overheated

 SOURCE:

"Does anyone wonder where all the global warming destruction is? After all, the media are unrelenting in telling us how much climate change caused by man is affecting us. Yet no existential threat has emerged. There’s something off with the story.

The climate alarmists have based their predictions of doom on computer models that have been projecting global temperature increases, the likes of which, they tell us, are unsustainable. We must cut our carbon dioxide emissions, even if (actually, especially if) it hurts developed world economies.

Road, Bridge and Water System Infrastructure Slowly Collapsing in California

 SOURCE:

"California’s infrastructure has been collapsing after years of neglect — despite record-setting state revenues. But the state’s political leaders aren’t content merely allowing our roads, freeways, bridges, and water systems to fall into disrepair. These days they aren’t just shrugging at bureaucratic incompetence. They actively are sabotaging these infrastructure systems.

If that sounds like an overstatement, then consider the latest evidence. Two weeks ago, this column spotlighted one state agency’s efforts to torpedo an Orange County desalination project that could meet up to 16 percent of the water needs of that county with a population of 3.1 million. Worried about the impact of the water facility on Pacific plankton populations (and rising sea levels from climate change), the California Coastal Commission staff issued a report urging the elected commissioners to deny the plant a permit.

As Gasoline and Diesel Fuei Prices Set New Records, Biden Halts More Oil And Gas Projects

 SOURCE:

"CBS News revealed the Biden administration canceled more oil and gas leases across the country this week as soaring gas prices reached new heights Wednesday.

The Department of Interior canceled plans to drill in more than 1 million acres in Alaska’s Cook Inlet, arguing “lack of industry interest,” on top of canceling a pair of leases in the Gulf of Mexico over “conflicting court rulings.”

Diesel Fuel Prices Up & Inventories Down = Very Bad News

Ukraine cites "force majeure," cuts off one-third of Russian gas bound for Europe

 SOURCE:

"The Ukrainian government has just made a move that is sure to disrupt Europe and move the continent closer to a third world war than at any time since the last global conflict ended.

Citing “force majeure” — that is, a common clause in contracts that frees both parties from liability or obligation stemming from an extraordinary event beyond their control (like a war) occurs — Kyiv’s move reduces the flow of natural gas from Russian giant Gazprom by at least one-third at a time when the European continent cannot easily replace the lost supplies.

After Build Back Baloney legislation failed, Adolph Biden will ahchieve the same climate goals with regulations

 SOURCE:

"In a 2020 article published in the Cornell Journal of Law and Public Policy, Graham Steele described a detailed plan to use federal financial regulatory agency powers to implement a new national industrial policy without legislation. The plan was to use the powers of the financial regulatory agencies to restrict the flow of credit and capital to firms and activities that produce greenhouse gas emissions.

The plan uses the Financial Stability Oversight Council (FSOC) to declare climate change as a systemic risk, which in turn requires FSOC members to use their Dodd-Frank regulatory powers to impose new regulations to mitigate the alleged climate-change systemic risk threatening the financial system.

European Gas Importers Quietly Surrender to Russia and Begin Buying Gas in RUBLES While the West’s Economic Warfare Scheme Backfires

 SOURCE:

"When the Russian military crossed into Ukraine and Vladimir Putin stated his military objectives there, European leaders were quick to escalate the situation, imposing sweeping economic and banking sanctions against the Russian people. These sanctions caused a domino effect of unintended consequences throughout Europe and the West.

The United States, Canada and Europe put up a tough, “united front” against Russia, but as their trade war against Russia escalated, supply chains were threatened and prices for valuable commodities increased throughout the West.

Energy consummer prices up +30.3% in the year from April 2021 to April 2022

Compared to year ago, energy CPI spiked by 30.3%. This Energy CPI weights 8.3% of overall CPI. Some standouts:
  • Gasoline: -6.1% for the month, but +43.6% year-over-year.
  •
  • Utility natural gas to the home: +3.1% for the month and +22.7% year-over-year.
  •
  • Electricity service: +0.7% for the month, +11.0% year-over-year.

Making climate predictions is easy -- getting them right is hard

"There’s currently a heat wave in the Indian subcontinent. Which if you’ve ever been there might strike you as old news, or no news at all. But it’s climate change, of course.

Al Jazeera kicked off with ‘Hottest summer ever’: Many Indian states under ‘severe’ heatwave/ Heatwaves have killed more than 6,500 people in India since 2010 and scientists say climate change is making them harsher and more frequent.” And you had to read quite a long way down to find the scientific foundation for that headline: “what local media reports said was its ‘hottest summer ever’.”

Science must be reproducible — Part One, by Jay Lehr, Ph.D.

Demographics: Deglobalization Will Fix Climate Change

 SOURCE:

“We are on the verge of something fundamentally different right now, yes. But a lot of it looks more like the world before 1945 than the world of the future.” There is good news coming out of the global population collapse.

A little while back, a friend introduced me to the work of developmental economist Peter Zeihan. He identifies as a socially conservative libertarian but seems to be slightly further to the left than that. His science is spot on and he presents it in a way that’s agenda-free. He tells it like it is, is known for his accurate forecasts, and I think we need to listen to him. Here is a recent and very concise presentation of his scholarship.

Biden DOJ sets up a new 'Office of Environmental Justice' -- headed by another fanatic

 SOURCE:

"As if we didn't need yet another government agency in this age of behemoth federal spending, the Biden administration has saddled the U.S. with a new one, the Office of Environmental Justice.

The $1.4 million monstrosity will be buried within the U.S. Department of Justice under the authority of U.S. associate attorney general, Vanita Gupta, who set up the new bureaucracy-enforcer arm. It will be headed by one Cynthia M. Ferguson, whose title is acting director. And you can bet it's going to be a problem.

"CLINTEL is collecting signatures on a great thing called the World Climate Declaration or WCD. I gladly signed it awhile back and they just hit 1,000 signatures.

I am here putting the word out, so that others may sign. It is a powerful statement of skepticism. You do not have to agree with every word to sign.

Gasoline & Diesel Prices Spike to New Records, But Don’t Blame Crude Oil

Hooray! Some Scientists Honestly Reporting That Climate Models Run “Too Hot”, by meteorologist Anthony Watts

 SOURCE:

"In a new report, some climate scientists are putting the brakes on future warming and say other researchers should avoid suspect climate models. This research confirms what Climate Realism first reported in August 2021, the climate model Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5 (RCP8.5) produces “implausibly hot forecasts of future warming.”

Now a group of climate scientists argues in a commentary published recently in Nature, researchers should no longer use the average of all the climate model projections, which contains Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5 (RCP 8.5), the highest emission scenario ever used. They say this can result in global temperature projections by 2100 up to 0.7°C warmer than an estimate from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). An example is seen in Figure 1 below.

Biden climate advisor boasts ‘100 rules this year alone on appliances’ & urges ‘sustainable airlines’ – Warns industry ‘better be’ all in ‘or they’re gonna be out of here’

 SOURCE:

"White House National Climate Advisor & former EPA chief Gina McCarthy: "We have solutions that can deliver. We're actually going to do 100 rules this year alone on appliances, just like you asked. We are developing partnerships on how we work together for new building standards, even for sustainable airlines. Who'd a thunk that they'd be all in, but they better be, or they're gonna be out of here."

Climate Depot's Morano comment:
"Welcome the Dystopia USA 2022. The very last thing Americans need right now is a regulatory ambush of 100 additional climate 'rules' that would impact every major home appliance but do absolutely nothing for the climate.

Diesel Fuel: Supply chains and the energy that fuels them

 SOURCE:

"America's disturbing supply chain problems aren't near to being fixed.  On the news we hear of store shelves not having baby formula. At the center of such breakdowns is trucking. Everything but everything is transported to stores by trucks — semi-trucks.

Semi-trucks run on diesel, not petrol (gasoline), and the price of diesel is much higher than the price of petrol.  Some truckers are reportedly at the point where they may have to shut down due to the price of diesel.

To fix the economy and inflation we must stop the extremists’ war on fossil fuels

 SOURCE:

"After Joe Biden took office, he immediately told the world his main goal was to get rid of fossil fuels -- and inflation started to rise. We were first told that the inflation was rising because Biden's excellent policies have caused the economy to recover. The truth is that the economy started to recover in the 3rd quarter of 2020, under Trump, and was rapidly improving before Biden took office.  And yet we didn't have high inflation.

Then, without evidence, Biden, Fed chairman Powell, Treasury Secretary Yellen and others said that the inflation was transitory and would soon subside. They made this up to allow them to continue spending massive amounts of government money and to continue to print money and keep interest rates artificially low, near zero. This caused the inflation problem to rapidly compound.

Electric Vehicle utopia takes a deadly U-turn -- battery fires

 SOURCE:

"Electric vehicles have been pushed hard as a solution to the world’s faux climate emergency, but in India they have turned into killing machines.  Many EV bikes and scooters have been bursting into flames across the country. The frequency of such incidents has increased considerably since spring 2022.

In my home state of Tamil Nadu, a man and his daughter were killed when their EV scooter caught fire. You might think it as a one-off incident, but that is not the case.

European hypocrites return to fossil fuels

SOURCE:

"At the beginning of March, Frans Timmermans, the European Union’s Executive Vice President for the European Green New Deal and European Commissioner for Climate Action, announced that EU nations planning to burn coal as an alternative to Russian natural gas are not out of line with the EU’s climate goals.

The news came just a week ago that United Kingdom housing secretary Michael Gove would likely approve the nation’s first new coal mine in three decades. The new plant, if approved, would produce coking coal for steelmaking. The reason? Russian coal is toxic now.

Why It's Almost Impossible To Build A Natural Gas Pipeline In The US

 SOURCE:

"Here’s a hard political reality behind high energy prices: It has become nearly impossible to build a natural gas pipeline in the U.S.

Consider West Virginia’s Mountain Valley pipeline, which has come under a relentless siege by green groups and activists in judicial robes. While more than 90% complete, the pipeline is in danger of getting canceled.

Climate Scientists Do Everything To Make Us Skeptical

 SOURCE:

"Why do many laymen oppose drastic climate action despite what scientists say?  Among the reasons is that not all scientists favor such actions.  But for some of us a major reason is what’s written by so many scientists who do.

A case in point is Lawrence M. Krauss’s recent attack on Steven E. Koonin, apparently triggered by Dr. Koonin’s upcoming book, Unsettled: What Climate Science Tells Us, What It Doesn’t, and Why It Matters.  Dr. Krauss fumbles right from the start by implying that Dr. Koonin is as dismissive of other disciplines as Dr. Krauss says prominent physicists Freeman Dyson and Richard Feynman were.

After discussions over the past few weeks on how global climate modelers ignore advances in our understanding of the atmosphere, particularly over the past 50 years, and our understanding of earth’s climate history, particularly over the past 2.5 million years, this TWTW discusses some of the consequences of this deliberate ignorance. [If surgeons deliberately ignored advances in medicine over the past 50 years, they would be accused of medical malpractice. Instead, climate modelers receive Nobel Prizes.

Oil Emergency?

The Globalist Psychopaths Pushing the Climate Change Scam Believe That the Real Enemy Is Humanity Itself

 SOURCE:

... "To me it is as clear as day that, on climate change as on Covid, the same group of powerful billionaires and unaccountable globalist organisations like the UN are pushing the same sort of dishonestly-concocted narrative backed up by the same sort of MSM suppression of honest facts, the same sort of brainwashing of the general public and the same sort of Big Tech coercions.

Politicians and climate activists assert that we are living in a climate crisis and that it is imperative that the world gets to Net Zero emissions (effectively net zero fossil fuel consumption) by 2050, if not sooner. Sadly, a large part of the brainwashed general public meekly acquiesces.

The two largest reservoirs in California are already at 'critically low levels' and the dry season is just starting

 NOTE:
The California water infrastructure has not been improved to support the large population growth and agriculture needs. CNN never mentioned that. I had to fact check this CNN article, which continues their reputation for lying. One sentence that was deleted: "Facing back-to-back dry years and record-breaking heat waves pushing the drought into historic territory", because that statement is not true:

And the last two paragraphs were deleted, for including pure speculation about a future horrible climate, that exists only in leftist imaginations. Fortunately there was enough good material left to make an interesting article:

California Needs More Power to Keep the Lights on This Summer

 SOURCE:

"Incredibly, California is warning that unless it can find more power, the state will be unable to keep the lights on this summer if heatwaves, wildfires, and other extreme weather events happen.

It’s incredible when you consider that California, at one time, had five working nuclear power plants. Now they have one. The state used to have 242,000 oil wells. They now have a little more than half that number.

Two Paris Electric Buses Spontaneously Explode, Entire Fleet Taken Off the Road

"A state-owned public transport operator in Paris, France, the Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens, has pulled out 149 electric buses from its fleet after two of them spontaneously exploded within the same month.

The RATP decided to temporarily retire the electric vehicles after the second explosion occurred around 9 a.m. on April 29 near the François Mitterrand Library, according to reporting from the local newspaper Le Parisien and a RATP news release.

Middle of the Night Climate Rap -- The IPCC is a political organization and their Report is the bible for climate scaremongering

IPCC wild guess predictions of the future climate, that have been wrong since 1988, are not science. Starting with the conclusion that global warming is controlled by the CO2 level, caused by man made CO2, and will be rapid and dangerous, so must be stopped is not science. Science does not start with a conclusion. The IPCC arbitrarily dismissing all natural causes of climate change as "noise" in 1995, is not science. The IPCC quoting climate computer games, that predict whatever the programmers want predicted, and have grossly over predicted the warming rate for 40 years, is not science.

The IPCC is a political organization that censors contrary data and opinions. The future climate can not be predicted -- the IPCC has proved that. There are no data for the future climate. Data-free predictions are not science, especially when they have been proven wrong decade after decade. Climate predictions can only be based on unproven theories and speculation. And that adds up to climate astrology, not climate science.

The "peer review" process is irrelevant for junk science that get published. IPCC reports are junk science that get published. So it is obvious the peer review process is not working.

Some people ask:
"Why would anyone trust the IPCC's reports?"
A better question:
"Why would anyone read the IPCC's reports?"
They all say the same thing, which is anti-science circular reasoning, so there is no logical reason to read more than one IPCC report.

This is what they all say:  'Assuming global warming is man made and dangerous, we predict that future global warming will be man made and dangerous ... and will be worse than we claimed in our last report, so never mind our last report.'

Every IPCC report is a tall, steaming pile of farm animal digestive waste products -- leftist political scaremongering based on junk science and wild guess speculation, pretending to be real science, by the use of the Appeal to Authority logical fallacy.

IPCC reports and climate computer games are tools used to create fear. Fear is used by leftists to increase government powers. That strategy was VERY obvious during the COVID scaremongering. It's also obvious with "climate change", with the scaremongering getting louder and more hysterical since the 1980s.

The only "climate" question leftists care about now:
How much money can we spend on Nut Zero?
No debate is allowed on climate science.
Leftists already have enough anti-CO2 zealots.

That's why accurate IPCC reports and computer games don't matter. Repeated wrong predictions of climate doom don't matter. The Climate Howlers will just make another 12 years to doom prediction when the last 12 year prediction of doom 'expires'.

The belief in a coming climate crisis \was not created with facts, data and logic. Therefore, the belief can't be refuted with facts, data and logic. The best we can do is to point out, and ridicule, the 100+ years of wrong predictions of various imagined coming environmental crises that never show up. Don't try to debate Climate Howlers when you can ridicule and insult them !

Never forget that "climate change" is just a prediction of climate doom, and predictions are not reality. We have the advantage of living in reality. Reality is that our current climate may be the best climate for humans, animals, and especially for plants, since the Holocene Climate Optimum ended about 5,000 years ago.

Reality is on our side. But we are fighting a climate religion, not climate science. And their bible is the Appeal to Authority IPCC Report. They own the historical climate data, and revise it at will. So It's an uphill battle against climate propaganda and scaremongering. I won't back down, and I hope you feel the same way.
