Only measure during an uptrend = lots of new records
All surface measurements were compiled during a warming trend since 1850 ... so of course there will be new records set until the warming trend ends, and a cooling trend begins.
Imagine the average temperature increased +0.1 degrees from 1850 to 1851, and then stayed the same through 2015 ... you could then say 2015 was the warmest year on record !
New records don't mean much if all measurements are during an uptrend -- new records are expected during an uptrend -- that's what an uptrend is -- they should not be front page headlines.
Many years without a new record would be news.
-- Now look at all the new records that were set from 1937 through 1944, and imagine "warmunists" bellowing the data made it obvious a global warming disaster was ahead and life on Earth would end as we knew it ... and then Earth had a cooling trend from the early 1940s to the mid-1970s!
Fortunately the warmunists were not around back then to scare everyone with their fantasy of a coming climate change catastrophe.
There were other things to worry about, that were actually important, such as a Great Depression that would not end, and another World War:
