The Appleton Guidebook
originated for Britain
in the mid 19th century,
and later went international.
The Appleton Guidebook
was a tourist book
for rail travelers
in Victorian times.
It included much
detailed information
about the railways,
stopovers on route,
hotels to stay in,
tourist attractions,
famous buildings, etc.
An Appleton Guide for Alaska,
published in 1899, stated:
"Old residents insist
that the climate is changing.
That the summers
are warmer and drier.
The rapid retreat
of all the glaciers
during even 20 years
is offered as another proof."
The issue of warming
in Alaska, and
glaciers melting,
glaciers melting,
was addressed
in 1899 !
in 1899 !
Global warming and
retreat glaciers
began long before
man made CO2
could have had
any effect on
the climate.
That Alaskan glaciers
began receding in the
late 1700's, is well known
to scientists.
Many scientists have
closely measured
and studied glaciers
throughout Alaska,
and their conclusions
have always been
the same.
Alaska glacier retreat began
in the late 18th century,
and most of the retreat
took place in the 19th
and early 20th centuries !
This climate history
was common knowledge
to a writer of a tourist guidebook
about Alaska, published in 1899 !
