China approved
nearly 10 gigawatts (GW)
of new coal-fired
power generation
capacity in this year’s
first quarter.
In comparison,
all of the existing
UK coal-fired capacity
was 12 GW, at the
end of 2018.
For China,
10 GW approved
in first quarter 2020,
is roughly equal
to the amount
approved for
ALL of last year.
Investment in
infrastructure,
such as power
generation,
has played an
important part
in China’s rapid
economic rise.
Many expect additional
infrastructure spending
to play an important role
as Beijing tries to
restart the economy,
post COVID-19.
The virus had brought
economic activity a crawl,
leading to the first quarterly
contraction since modern
record keeping began.
China was a "signatory"
to the Paris Agreement.
Well, actually,
each participant
was asked to
write his own
“intention” ,
and sign it.
They were not asked
to write a commitment,
just to write an Intention !
