Greenland –the poster boy for global warming – set an all-time cold record on January 2, 2020

An unofficial Greenland
cold record of −66.1 °C
        ( −87.0 °F )
was set January 9, 1954.

Set at a temporary
research station
which wasn't
an official DMI
weather station,
so the -66 C.
is not recognized
as an official
Greenland
cold record.

The -66 C.
location:  Northice,
a research station
established by
the British North
Greenland Expedition
(Hamilton and Rollitt, 1957).

The period-of-record
at Northice was
less than 2 years.

It was on
the same ice cap,
but north of
the ‘Summit’ camp.

-65 C.
at Summit Camp
Greenland,
January 2, 2020:
The -65 C. low,
once confirmed by the
Danish Meteorological
Institute  ( DMI )
would enter
the record books
as Greenland’s
coldest-ever
temperature
recorded at an
OFFICIAL
weather
station.

-65 C. would be
the coldest Greenland
temperature in the
official record,
for anywhere
across the island,
and in any month
of the year.

Table of the old
Summit Camp
temp records
(all-time low record
broken on Jan 02, 2020).

January 2, 2020
was a cold day
at SUMMIT:
 At  23:13 utc
the temperature
had a minimum
 -64,9C. … and the
same temperature
was registered
at 23:15 and 23:16

The temperature
had dropped by over
three degrees C.
from 23.00 to 23.16,
and then rose by
three degrees C.
by 23.58.

Modern measuring
techniques capture
rapid temperature
changes that previous
measuring instruments
might have missed.

Assuming
the same thing
also happens with
warm temperatures,
this is a very good
illustration of
at least one reason
why we are seeing
more heat records.

The previous
coldest ever day
officially recorded
in Greenland
was -63.3 C
 ( minus 81 F. ).

On January 2, 2020,
after a century
of global warming,
the thermometer
at Summit Camp s
unk to at least -64.9 C.

The DMI confirmed
that NOAA GeoSummit
records showed
it got down to -64.9 C,
an all time record.

The DMI equipment
has now been closed,
but was at
the same location
as the Geo Summit,
so readings should
be comparable.

I await
the new record
low temperature
in Greenland,
to be officially
declared
by NOAA,
in the U.S.,
and reported
in the headlines
of the world’s press!

But I will not
hold my breath
while waiting !

Compare this
to the rush
to declare
the highest ever
June temperature
in Greenland last year,
which was announced
in the newspapers
but turned out
to be wrong,
and was corrected
one week later.

The Danish
Meteorological
Institute (DMI),
which has
a key role
in monitoring
Greenland’s climate,
reported a shocking
August temperature
of between 2.7C
and 4.7C at the
Summit weather
station, which is
located 3,202m
above sea level
at the the center
of the Greenland
ice sheet.

That alleged warmth
generated many
global headlines.

A quality check
later confirmed
last year's August
high temperature
measurement
was too high,
due to snow
blocking an air vent ,
leading to erroneous
measurement.

A suspicious
person
might wonder
if a reason
will be found
to dismiss
this new
cold record
( maybe
someone
left the
refrigerator
door open? )

Note:
The lowest
temperature
ever recorded
in the Northern
Hemisphere
was at Oymyakon,
Russia, in 1933,
at  −89.9F
( −67.7C. ).
