A record-breaking
heatwave in Siberia
would have been
almost impossible
without human-caused
climate change,
a study has found.
The Russian region’s
temperatures were
more than +5C above
average between January
and June of this year.
Temperatures exceeded
38C in the Russian town
of Verkhoyansk
on June 20. 2020.
The previous highest
temperature there was
37.3°C, on July 25, 1988.
The Arctic is warming
much faster than
the global average.
But there was nothing
exceptional about
the heatwave
at Verhojansk
last month,
as temperatures
were only
+0.7 degrees C.
higher than in 1988.
June 2020 in Verhojansk,
Russia was a degree or two
higher than usual,
but it was hotter
in June 1912!
And their hottest
Verhojansk summer
on record was
back in 1917.
