I got this note in the mail from an old friend I had not heard from since the 1970s:
"In 1975 when I read Newsweek and Time, they said many scientists were predicting global cooling was going to end life on Earth as we knew it.
So I had a bunker built, and went underground in 1976 with 40 years of food and water.
It's 2016 now, and my food was running out, so I came up from the bunker with ice skates and a sled to go shopping for food.
I was very surprised to see the climate was wonderful.
Where was all the ice?
Unfortunately, people are now saying global warming is going to end life on Earth as we know it.
So now I have to go underground again for another 40 years."
The above story is fictional sarcasm reminding readers that global cooling was a popular boogeyman for a while in the mid-1970s.
And then we were told "never mind" global warming is the new boogeyman!
